K-Fellfarers' 75th Anniversary

The K Fellfarers, the Kendal-based walking and climbing club founded in 1934, has just announced the publication of a commemorative book in celebration of its 75th anniversary last year.

The forming of the Club and its hostel were the inspiration of Somervell Brothers director Leslie Somervell, brother of Howard Somervell of Everest fame, and Factory Superintendent William Ingall. They saw that the founding of such a club offered the employees, of what was to become K Shoes of Kendal, the opportunity to enjoy their local hills and the healthy benefits of outdoor activities.

The book tells of the founding and development of the Club, its search and eventual success in finding and rebuilding High House in Borrowdale, turning it into the thriving mountain hut it is today, together with much more information about the early history of High House and the subsequent history of the Club. In its 248 pages the book contains many rarely seen black and white and colour photographs from the eight decades of the Club's existence. These, along with the story, give a unique insight into the social history of a local club and its relationship with the idyllic Lakeland valley of Borrowdale.

The book “K Fellfarers and High House” is available to purchase by contacting Hughie Taylor or by telephone on 01524 762067.
