The UIAA Youth Commission is the youth activity branch of the world body for climbing & mountaineering, the UIAA.
It offers an annual programme of activities for participating Federations and advice is also provided for youth leaders and Federations. The annual programme of activities consists of practical elements such as climbing and trekking, through to events with a focus on the appreciation of the environment and rock climbing festivals.
The UIAA Youth Commission believe that climbing and mountaineering are activities which give young people all over the world an opportunity to experience adventure and develop socially and educationally. Their view is that today's children are the future of the sport and must be a priority. Therefore they encourage and help their member organisations to focus on youth by:
- Assisting member federations in establishing youth programmes and supporting existing ones.
- Helping with the training and development of youth leaders by organising international seminars and training courses.
- Making guidelines that member federations can use to develop their own courses.
- Functioning as a forum for the exchange of information on good practice, ideas and experience regarding youth and mountaineering.
- They also offer advice for event orgnaisers.
The UIAA Youth Commission have an increasing focus on environmental awareness and their programme has been growing geographically over the last few years. The opportunity to exchange views and make decisions on issues important to different Federations exists at the Youth Commission's meetings and seminars.
