Where there's muck there's brass. And where there's a Yorkshire Grit Volume 1, sure as Shipley Glen there'll be a Volume 2. Well here it is, and it's even bigger, badder and better than the first one.
The team who brought the magnificent first instalment have laboured hard over the last couple of years to bring their magic to the crags on the south and west flanks of this great gritstone county.
This volume stretches its coverage from the urban quarries around Halifax and Hebden to Widdop’s wild black yonders; from Ilkley’s cold shoulder to Earl Crag’s royal highballs; From cheeky Crookrise to randy Rylstone high on Barden Moor.
As before the book gives definitive information on routes and bouldering. It has got great descriptions which give flavour and inspiration in equal measure and the depth of knowledge behind every word is palpable. The histories and interviews are fun and informative. Robin Nicholson, Adi Gill and the team deserve a bunch of New Year’s Honours.
What shines, however, are the photographs. The cragshots are just a glory to behold. Never has Yorkshire grit shone like this: where there’s muck there’s gold. The action shots are sumptuous. Mike Hutton’s dedication has paid off by the bucket and Ed Bishop’s incredible aerial photos bring a new dimension to the crags.
And now the bad news: you never knew how many great crags you still have to visit, how many amazing routes you’ve not yet done. How’s that make you feel?
