Climbers in Pembrokeshire have a new place to escape the wet weather and get on the training scene with the opening of The Hangout in the Haverfordwest Leisure Centre.
This relatively new climbing wall opened up late 2015 and gives climbers something else to do other than sit in a café when rain forces them indoors.
Boasting a surface area of 235 square metres, The Hangout say they can accommodate up to 50 climbers at a time. Plus with a 12m high main wall, including steep routes and slabs on offer for leading and top roping, climbers of all abilities can find something to challenge them.
Speaking to the West Wales Chronicle, Climbing Wall Co-ordinator, Liz Collyer, said: “It really is a facility that all members of the community can use. We have such a fantastic natural environment around us and we would like to start showing people how to explore it from a slightly different perspective.
“To get youngsters started we have a children’s club called ‘Cheeky Chimps’ already up and running for eight to 12-year-olds and there is also an older club ‘The Hangout Club’ for youngsters between 13 and 16. Adult courses, family ‘have-a-go’ sessions and birthday parties are also available.”
Dream Climbing Walls constructed the The Hangout, which includes features such as a 2.5m horizontal roof on the competition wall, a hexagonal column with a series of mini roofs, overhanging corners and a variety of slabs.
