What is the Association of British Climbing Walls (ABC)?
Indoor climbing walls are an exciting and energetic challenge, even for people who have little experience.
There are many factors involved in the safe operation of these walls and for managers, statutory requirements and duty of care are critically important.
The Association of British Climbing Walls (ABC) gives environmental health officers, insurers and climbing wall users the confidence that the highest standards of safety are practised at member walls.
Its main objective is to develop and benchmark safe operating practices and best-quality management procedures for artificial climbing structures.
Some of the initiatives the ABC have helped develop include:
-
ABC Guidelines for the Management and Use of Artificial Climbing Structures endorsed by the Health and Safety Executive
-
The ABC Operational Aide Memoir
-
A Lead Authority Initiative with Sheffield City Council
-
The Accident Statistics Review
-
Risk assessment workshops
-
A safety video for use by environmental health officers and climbing wall managers
-
Young Person Guidelines
New and existing climbing walls are welcome as prospective members. Initially, aspirant membership is available for one year. Full membership is available after one year for climbing walls that comply with ABC guidelines.
