Last month Fran Brown became Para-climbing World Champion when she came first in the female physical-disability category in Paris. Following Fran’s great achievement, we’ve received some emails reminding us about Simon Nadin and his World Cup success in 1989.
This was the first-ever World Cup Series and Simon won. making him the World Cup Champion, a tremendous achievement which is still - quite rightly - remembered today.
My foreword in the latest BMC email newsletter referred to Fran as our first climbing World Champion and whilst this may be technically correct it’s probably a little over pedantic.
Simon was the first World Cup Climbing Champion which, to all intents and purposes, made him the first-ever climbing World Champion as there wasn’t a world championship event at that time.
Anyway, congratulations to Fran, it’s great that she now rates alongside Simon as one of our top competition climbers!
