This winter sees several new climbing walls opening in a variety of locations around the UK. Two new walls have already opened, with three more due by the end of the year.
Last month the Durham Climbing Centre opened its doors, offering the highest bouldering in the world, using fountainbleau style circuits on a variety of angled terrain.
A climbing wall has just opened in Luton. Details are limited, but the wall is located in the Putteridge recreation centre.
Opening in November is the Chill Factor e near the Trafford Centre, Manchester - offering a wide variety of outdoor sports such as skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding as well as having a climbing wall, details are limited at the moment.
Opening in December/January is Liverpool's Awesome Walls second venue based in Stockport, Manchester - this new wall promises lead climbing up to 23m, with a freestanding fin, and 400sqm of bouldering.
A new wall in Birmingham should be open before Christmas. The
Redpoint Climbing Centre will include 12.5m high lead walls, extensive bouldering and a purpose-built training room.
Some difficulty with a ‘change of use’ planning application means that the
Climbing Works Bristol, due to open in November, now plans to open in 2008. With over 1300sqm of bouldering it should be the largest bouldering facility in the world.
There is also information slowly trickling through about plans for a large climbing centre to be built in Newcastle and another one in Middlesborough. If anyone has anymore information about this or any of the other walls please contact the Climbing Walls Officer, Rob Adie at the BMC -
