Lake District winter conditions guide

Posted by Rob Dyer on 17/01/2015

The Lake District White Guide is a new booklet available for free; full of essential advice to help you plan and head out for a day of winter climbing in England’s mountain mecca.

Following on from the success of the North Wales White Guide, this booklet contains a similar wealth of information for the Lake District in a compact format that is easily slipped into a guidebook cover or pocket.

With comprehensive advice on how to minimise your impact on sensitive mountain habitats, as well as where to find good conditions, how to identify them at the crag and details of Lakes winter ethics; this is a must read for any winter climber, new or old heading for the Lakes.

The booklet includes:

  • Topos for all sensitive crags in the Lakes, with clearly marked areas (showing where rare arctic alpine plants are located), which should be avoided unless turf is frozen solid
  • A detailed insight into when and where to find good winter conditions in the Lakes, with information on the weather patterns needed to bring different crags and types of climbing into condition
  • Details of the types of plant found on the crags of the Lake District and how they have become so rare
  • Advice on how to look after turf and why it is important for both winter climbing and conservation
  • An easy to understand map showing where crags and buttresses which have been agreed as ‘rock climbing only’ areas are located as well as details on how this came about

The booklet is available to download for free (pdf) now and is also available as a free hard copy booklet through the BMC shop or local Lake District climbing shops, walls and visitor centres.

All that’s needed now is a drop in temperature and a plastering of snow and ice – here’s hoping for a great 2015 winter season!

A great article. Being safe in the winter while in the Lake District is so important. Your guide really can help so many people who are visiting through the winter months. Such a great idea to get this written out for everyone and a great introduction to safety while hiking in the Lake District through the more unpredictable darker winter months.
