Green Guide to the uplands

This booklet contains essential information on the mountain environment and how BMC members can do their best to care for the fragile upland landscape.

It contains general information on access, conservation, hill walking, climbing, scrambling and winter mountaineering as well as more detailed advice on sanitation, transport, camping and sustainable crag use, referring to good practice for groups visiting the crag.

It is hoped that this booklet will be widely used by all those visiting the outdoors. The Green Guide to the Uplands offers a concise explanation of the issues affecting the mountain environment and offers some advice as to how each one of us can be part of the solution and reduce our impact.

What is considered a ‘group’ whilst out on the crags or in the hills? Instructed groups and university club meets might be what immediately spring to mind, but in reality many climbers and walkers frequently spend their time in what could be seen as a group by other users.

my name is shaun dakin and im a 20 yeal old climbing from sheffield england. for the last 3 weeks iv being traveling england on climbs with my team 7A, in next the 5 week we are going to check out a load indoor climbs and outdoor climbs across the uk. but for the last few weeks i have being feeling like im just not getting the buzz i want from climbing, so after lots of research i have decided to start a expedition to snowdonia. as little to non of my team will join im starting a open invitation to anyone who want to tackel snowdonia with me for 2 day weekend later in the year june,july time.
