Last autumn, children at Berrymede Primary School in Ealing had never experienced climbing. That all changed when a traversing wall was installed in their playground.
Fast forward ten months and the school has a climbing club, strong links with their local wall The Westway, a visit from Molly Thompson-Smith and this summer seven children spent a weekend in Snowdonia, Eryri in Welsh, climbing 60m routes and summiting Snowdon.
All of this has been spearheaded by Berrymede PE teacher Steven Cotton with whom much credit lies. Parents and teachers at the school, the Youth Sport Trust and Ealing Council have all witnessed very positive outcomes from climbing becoming a fundamental part of school life.
“My daughter who is 10 years old, has embraced rock climbing despite very early starts, often at 7.30am, to do so. Her confidence radiates through her character, creating a furtive sense of adventure and calculated risk taking.
“Berrymede Junior School’s decision to take 7 children to Wales to climb Mount Snowdon, rock climb and abseil 60 metres has challenged the children in a positive way and given them a great sense of achievement.
“I commend Mr Steve Cotton and all teachers for their commitment and dedication to bring such ventures to children who may never be given such an opportunity otherwise.
“Being away from home has also enabled my daughter to develop enhanced social skills. Overall, this sporting venture will for many years propel the children to believe in their own ability to succeed!”
Dr Geri Gowans from Ealing Borough Council is full of praise for the school, “Both primary and secondary school colleagues were inspired by the work you are doing with Berrymede Junior’s pupils on the climbing walls and on the Snowdon climb.”
“I believe you have made a significant direct impact on the health and well-being of your students. We know that through multiple occupancy of flats and houses, unbalanced diets and a lack of attractive activities available, Acton children have historically suffered from obesity.
“Berrymede Juniors children are now excelling in sports; motivated and seeking challenge on the climbing wall; and confident enough to climb a mountain.”
“You and your colleagues are helping our children to grow up healthy, resilient and fearless.
