The BMC caught up with Deaf Climbing UK for their launch event at Awesome Walls Sheffield in April 2016. We created a film to showcase the event and capture the buzz and excitement from both the participants and the organisers.
Deaf Climbing UK (DCUK) is a deaf-led organisation dedicated to increasing deaf access and participation in rock climbing. The aim is simple: to provide social, developmental, and competitive opportunities at climbing centres across the country and to build a community of deaf climbers in the UK.
Throughout the film we hear from participants who are trying climbing for the first time, Deaf Climbing UK tell us about their aims, and climbing wall instructors talk about their experiences in communicating with a group of climbers with hearing impairments.

Communication is often one of the biggest barriers to participating in climbing amongst those with a hearing impairment. Deaf Climbing UK are keen to break down the communication barriers by developing a Deaf Awareness in Rock Climbing course. Since the launch event Deaf Climbing UK have been piloting this course with staff at a number of climbing walls.
Suzi and the team at Deaf Climbing UK have also been busy organising some indoor and outdoor social climbing meets for climbers to have a go and progress their climbing.
For anyone looking to start climbing get in touch with Deaf Climbing UK who can point you in the right direction. You can also find a climbing wall or club near you and get in touch with them about joining a taster or induction session.
