We’re inviting BMC-affiliated Clubs to get involved and organise fundraisers to help boost our flagship campaign while promoting the positive benefits of club membership.
In 2016, the BMC’s Mend our Mountains (MoM) campaign crowd-funded over £100,000 to fund eight mountain path repair projects in England and Wales. After this success, Mend our Mountains is back with the ambitious target of raising £1 million to repair damaged paths in all fifteen of the UK’s National Parks. From Dartmoor to the Cairngorms, the New Forest to the Lakes: wherever your club is based there’s a project nearby that will benefit. The campaign brings together more than 25 organisation, businesses and user groups, with headline sponsorship generously provided by Cotswold Outdoor and Snow+Rock.
A key aim of Mend Our Mountains: Make One Million is to galvanise support from those that love the outdoors and inspire a sense of collective responsibility for looking after our most valued landscapes. We’re reaching out to the public, incentivising donations through raffles and giveaways, and encouraging individuals and groups to take part in fundraising events or challenges. We’re looking to involve as many BMC members as possible, and clubs can play a big part in this.
We’re inviting BMC clubs to be involved by organising their own fundraising events – these could be totally independent or partially organised by us. A great time to do it is National Parks Week, from 23rd – 29th July, when the campaign will be visible across the country; the aim is to have a nationwide coordinated effort to boost the campaign as it reaches the end of its first public phase. However, don’t feel constricted by this – it’s very much a case of every little helps, so if you think you can do something different, don’t hesitate to get in touch, or just get cracking.
Fundraisers could be big or small:
-
Run a sponsored walk in your local area
-
Enter a challenge race and get your club members to help raise sponsorship
-
Hold a climbing competition if you have access to a wall, collect donations in exchange for a scorecard
-
Have a bake sale at your local wall during your club night, bring home made cakes along and exchange them for donations
-
Contact the ‘Friends of’ group in your nearest National Park and organise an event with them – we can help you with this

We want to encourage clubs to use their experience and connections to do something that works for them. What’s most important is that as many clubs as possible get involved however they can, and help spread the message of the appeal to their members and into the wider community in their areas.

The BMC will be promoting clubs’ activities through its usual channels during the summer as part of the wider MoM campaign. It’s a great opportunity to get some exposure for your club, as well as helping raise some money for an excellent cause.
