Young climbers teamed up with club members for a weekend of multi-pitch adventures, new routes and inspiring lectures.

The Fell and Rock Climbing Club Youth Meet was organised in conjunction with the BMC, to give young people from the Lake District the chance to get outside on rock. Experienced club members partnered up with youngsters and headed out to Black Crag, Raven Crag Langdale and Raven Crag Walthwaite, sampling classic routes from Middlefell Buttress (Diff) to Trilogy (E5). Several young climbers also had the chance to join volunteer James McHaffie in authoring a new route, making the first ascent of Chance (E4 6a) at Raven Crag, Walthwaite.

Volunteers and participants were hosted by the FRCC at their Rawhead Hut in Langdale. On saturday evening, following a delicious meal shared meal, youngsters and volunteers enjoyed entertaining lectures from UK trad climbing stars Emma Twyford and James McHaffie.

The meet was successful in giving young climbers a solid introduction to traditional climbing. One of the weekend's participants, Holly Harper, nicely summarised her experiences:

'It was fantastic to meet such experienced climbers; I have gained much more knowledge and understanding of Traditional Climbing- as well as having a lot of fun! Trad is something I now hope to keep up with and certainly get more into.'
