The management at Great Sankey Leisure Centre, Warrington is planning to close the under-used 'Real Rock Bouldering Wall' and incorporate the space in a large extension. Hopefully, if more people use it then they may reconsider.

It would be a great shame to lose a wall which, although only popular with a small group of enthusiasts, does offer a climbing/training experience which is different from other walls in the area.

The wall has:

all natural rock holds;
an unlimited number of possible routes and problems up to 100 feet with ample opportunity to create your own routes. It is possible to use the wall all day without descending and very rarely repeat a route;
60-foot long Roof Route Challenges which have only been done three times in the last 22 years, and a 120-foot route which has never been done!!;
rock holds in place which will accept nut runners and cam devices to enable novices to be taught traditional, outdoor climbing techniques; and
a very modest entry cost, currently £3.00 for adults and £1.80 for under 16s.

Open:  Mon to Fri 5pm to 10pm
             Sat               8am to 8pm
             Sun              8am to 10pm

So get down there and stop this classic wall from closing its doors!

It's great to know that there are such fantastic resources such as this available. Unfortunately, they are not being promoted at all it seems, which will inevitably lead to their disappearance through lack of use. Agree reading this article, I searched online for the centre and found that there was no information on Warrington council's leisure hub, livewire, about any clinging venues, let alone the wall at great Stanley. Is it any wonder that they suffer from lack of use when no one but a few know of its existence.if we want climbing to be recognised as the great sport that it is and the general all round benefits in health, fitness and wellbeing that it offers, we need to ensure that it is visible and approachable.

it seems that the climbing wall era is on decay? here in my area there are 2 climbing walls going out in the next month- it is a pity but seems that money take priority over health and social benefit... too many people wanting to make money and a living from a single thing -as if you could plant oats and live only of them. Years ago ridiculous quotes because everyone was throwing thte money and not expending wisely ( still happening) and now they want money from abandoned heriatge! i.e i have been ask for a minimum of £500 intelectual fee for the drafts and drawings of the still work plus and Administartive fee for digitalizing/scanning them and sending them to me via email! This is of a climbing wall that was tailor made/built to fit on our centre. I do not think this is acceptable, as a client/customer I have expected those drawings and specification (by the way not upto date with En 12572-2007.building standards) but still want a fee of £500 minimum for inteltual rights ? is that a joke or i am on the wrong end with my thinking?
