Brilliant Bosigran hosts cracking Cornish climbing festival

The Count House, HQ for the 2014 BMC Cornish Climbing Festival.

Gather 80 climbers, add golden granite, deep blue-green sea and some of the finest real ales in the country, and you’ve got the recipe for a great weekend. Local BMC volunteer Gareth Palmer reports on the 2014 BMC Cornish Climbing Festival.

This year’s festival was held over the weekend of the 4-6 July at the Count House, the Climbers’ Club hut at Bosigran; a perfect focal point for the event, with world-class sea cliff climbing on the doorstep, hut facilities and camping, and a nearby pub. As an added bonus, we were blessed with one of the best weekends of the summer with wall to slab sunshine.

The festival kicked off on the Friday night with a few drinks in The Gurnard’s Head and a few tall stories. Saturday started with a good breakfast from the onsite catering guys at The Floating Millstone plus plenty of sun; the golden granite saw up to 80 climbers enjoying the best of West Cornwall. On Saturday evening we were treated to a belting curry, and an even better talk and slideshow from the ever so young Frank Cannings and Iain Peters. Then the Climbers against Cancer raffle raised over £300. Sunday came with a few sore heads, but still lots of climbing took place.

All in all it was a fantastic weekend and every one had a great time; thanks to everyone who volunteered their time and energy to make this year’s festival such a success. Roll on next year!

A special thank you to our Cornish Climbing Festival sponsors:

Breakfast of Champions.

Glorious golden granite.

The bubble blowing competition was intense.
