Guidebook collecting gets its bible

The ultimate guidebook of guidebooks

Guidebook collectors are an obsessive breed. They prowl around second-hand bookshops and websites, hunting down that rare edition or previously unknown pamphlet like a lion with a gazelle in its sights. Stumbling across a rare edition means one step closer to completing their collection.

But how can you tell your collection is complete? Well, now you can know precisely. This December sees the publication of British and Irish Climbing Guidebooks 1894 to 2011. This is the ultimate ‘guidebook of guidebooks’. It lists over 1,000 books, from the simple recordings of the earliest pioneers to the latest photo and topo filled blockbusters.

Front cover images and publication details for each title show the development of climbing guidebooks over the decades in a unique format. For anyone with an interest in how our sport has been recorded, from casual history lovers to serious collectors, this is an essential guide.

This book is only available directly from the BMC: buy it online now.

British and Irish Climbing guidebooks – The 2013 Supplement

Such is the way with recording history – as soon as you do it it’s out of date. Alan Moss’ recent, exhaustive catalogue, British and Irish Climbing Guidebooks 1894 to 2011 – A Collector’s Guide, was an exhaustive directory to the state of play of over a century of guidebooks. Since its recent publication, it will come as no surprise to hear that the light it shone on the subject has shown up some anomalies.

Behind the scenes: BMC guidebooks

In the first of a new series of articles, we'd like to highlight the work of BMC volunteers starting with the Guidebook Committee. Much of the BMC’s work is overseen by specialist groups made up of volunteers with relevant skills and experience, who guide the work of BMC staff. Now we'd like to take the time and look at these groups of dedicated souls one by one.
