The Alpine Club is the oldest national alpine club in the world, and the Alpine Club Climbing Fund has £10,000 to give away to alpine climbers every year.
The Alpine Club has been involved in the development of international mountaineering since 1857. In 2007, the club decided to celebrate its 150th anniversary by creating a new fund to help alpinists explore and climb new challenges all over the world.
The Alpine Club Climbing Fund is funded by an internal investment grant of £75,000 from the Alpine Club and an annual donation of £5,000 from First Ascent (UK distributors of several outdoor brands including Black Diamond, MSR and Thermarest). Every year, the Fund has £10,000 available to help expeditions to explore new areas and climb exciting peaks.
The Fund is only open to Alpine Club members. The aim of the grants, which are usually in the region of £500 - £1,500, is to support expeditions comprising Alpine Club members that have an exploratory element or are attempting a new or unique project.
Preference is given to expeditions undertaken by students and younger members. Expeditions seeking Alpine Club Climbing Fund grants need only have one Alpine Club member to be eligible, although the more AC members on the trip, the more the grant will be.
Just like the Lottery, you have to be in it to win it. Find out how to join the Alpine Club, and more information on the AC Climbing Fund, at the Alpine Club website
