BMC Area Youth Coordinator (AYC), Anne Chevalier organised an informal days climbing for parents and their children at Windgather Rocks near Kettleshulme, Whaley Bridge on Sunday 3rd July.
Windgather is known as one of the friendliest and most popular crags in the Peak District with a good range of grades and holds.
The aims were:
-
To go rock climbing outdoors
-
To meet other parents and their children
-
To make friends and contacts
-
To visit somewhere new
As it was an informal event there were no booking procedures. parents and children simply turned up at the crag on the day and parents were responsible for their own children.
The format worked well.
Anne Reports:
As the forecast was so good for the weekend we decided to camp in the Goyt Valley to try our new tent. After a good night's sleep we made our way to Windgather for 11.00am and found the crag already busy.
We met up with members of our local club and there were people from the BMC but without any way to make myself known it was difficult to find out who they were at a busy crag when they were already engaged in what they were doing. However, this is an issue that can easily be addressed by wearing a BMC AYC T-shirt and taking some BMC banners. We'll do this next time.
We quickly put our gear on and started on some easy routes and then more severe ones as we warmed up. People climbed for as long as they felt happy to do so. Some all day long.
It was a really enjoyable day. Sun, warmth and good company made the day perfect.
Although the crag was busy we never had to queue for a route and everyone enjoyed themselves and had a good time.
