Climbing ropes fail very rarely, but when they do it's usually down to either breaking over a sharp edge, or damage from acidic chemicals.
For the second time in the last few years, the Technical Committee has investigated a rope failure which has been caused by acid contamination.
Keep your ropes away from strong acids! Even the fumes from a leaking car battery can be hazardous, other potential sources include certain drain, oven and toilet cleaners. Think carefully about where you store and transport your ropes, and use a rope bag. Always check your rope before you use it, it only takes a couple of minutes and could save you or your partners life.
