Redpoint Indoor Climbing Centre stretches into the South West

Posted by Rob Adie on 05/08/2012

As the gateway to climbing in the South West and Wales, Bristol has always been a major indoor climbing destination. Now climbers will be able to look forward to even more variety and choice, as Redpoint Bristol begins construction in Bedminster, south of the city.

The new centre is an initiative from local climber Tom Gape, who is collaborating on design and construction with the experienced climbers and wall designers who already operate the much-loved Redpoint Climbing Centre in Birmingham.

“I’ve been searching for the right venue for some time and when I found out the fantastic old Odeon cinema on Winterstoke Road was available it all started to come together.”

“While I was based in the Midlands I got to know team at Redpoint Climbing Centre there, so when I found myself in a position to open a new wall in Bristol, they were the first people I thought of.  I’d like to offer the imaginative climbing and the sense of community and fun they’ve provided for climbers in Brum.”

Inspired by years of climbing on rock and indoor walls all over the world, Redpoint is well known for incorporating inventive structures, shapes and angles into their climbing facilities to create a really 3D climbing experience.

The art deco cinema building offers plenty of scope for the designers to allow their imagination full rein. Climbers can expect plenty of creative top roping and lead climbing facilities; up to 12 metres on 75 lines, plus bouldering areas.  Added to this there’ll be a comfortable café, changing facilities and the friendly atmosphere regulars in Birmingham have come to expect.

The centre will be opening early 2013 and there will be more information on the build and a construction blog, on the Redpoint website, or you can follow Redpoint Climbing Centre on Twitter and Facebook.
