Nine reasons why you should be attending the BMC AGM

Posted by Peter Burnside on 08/04/2016

Have you signed up for the BMC's AGM and annual gathering? No? Well here's nine reasons why you should join us in the heart of the Peak District over the weekend of 15-17 April.

Danger show and tell

Stroll back in time and prepare to be amazed by this tale of a young climber who cheated death twice in one afternoon. Frank Cannings, the star of the show, will introduce the BBC documentary In Extreme Danger about the perilous story of how he survived an 80ft fall onto jagged rocks on the island Lundy and a helicopter crash into the sea.

Free quiz

Following that adrenaline-fuelled physical struggles, prepare yourself for an epic mental battle as Rob Greenwood (chair of the Peak area), is hosting one of his infamously challenging outdoor quizzes to see who's the most outdoorsy of us all; no phones allowed.

Question the directors

It's your chance to voice all those questions you've been burning to ask for so long. And when better to do it than at the AGM, where BMC directors, staff and volunteers will have no escape. The Q&A session opens at 9:30am on Saturday and will focus on women in the outdoors.

Cast your vote

Don't miss out on your chance to tell us how to run the joint. As we're a membership organisation, we need you to cast your votes on the range of resolutions and candidates up for election.

Wandering walk #1

There's the chance to go on not one, but two delightful guided walks with other attendees of the AGM. The first up is on Saturday afternoon, where Peter Judd (Peak area hill walking representative) will take you on a journey from Limestone to Gritstone. Stopping along the way at Cave Dale, Mam Tor and along the Great Ridge to Lose Hill, before returning to Losehill Hall in time for the evening buffet.

Free food

That's right, we're putting on a spread. If you've taken the time to attend the AGM on Saturday and submit your vote, we'll reward your dedication with a free buffet that evening at 7:30pm. All we ask is that you book in advance so we can make sure there's enough food for everyone.

Wandering walk #2

To burn off all that free food, join us for a leisurely stroll on Sunday morning around the Edale Valley. The route planned takes us from Losehill Hall up to Hope Cross, then along the southern edge of Kinder Scout to Ringing Roger, before descending back to where we started.

Free Clubs and Huts seminar

If you're involved in running a club and want to know more about the ins and outs of clubs and huts, and how the BMC can help, then get yourself along to the free Clubs and Huts seminar on Saturday afternoon. This seminar covers topics such as where to find funding and local support for clubs and huts, all the way to delivering a great club experience.

Special BMC Shop offers

Loads of goodies from the BMC Shop will be available at special prices. So pick up one of the new limited edition t-shirts the celebrate Wales and Snowdon, or that climbing guidebook you've been meaning to buy for ages, or even a new map to take with you hiking.

All other reasons

You can discuss access with our Access team, eat and drink with old friends, eat and drink with new friends, escape to the delights of the Peak District for walking, climbing or anything else, participate in the charity auction, watch a ton of awesome BMC TV films, or go and watch the planting of the new Stanage Pole on Sunday, which happily coincides with the 65th anniversary of when the Peak District became Britain's first National Park.

So what are you waiting for? Fill in the booking form to reserve your place for accommodation, the buffet, or any of the activities.

We want to say a big thanks to every BMC member who continues to support us through the Coronavirus crisis.

From weekly Facebook Lives and GB Climbing home training videos, to our access team working to re-open the crags and fight for your mountain access, we couldn’t do it without you.

Did you know that we've just launched a new U27 membership offer for just £1.50 / month? And with full membership from £2.50 / month, it's never been easier to join and support our work:
