New Teaching Navigation Handbook Launched

A new handbook for teaching navigation was launched today at the BMC Offices.

Published by Harvey for the National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS), the handbook is designed to support tutors delivering the NNAS awards or anyone else who teaches navigation. It is the first comprehensive book specifically designed to support the teaching of navigation.

The National Navigation Award Scheme is a personal performance, non-competitive, incentive scheme for all ages. There are currently two separate strands: the Bronze, Silver and Gold levels of the Navigator Award and the Young Navigator Star Award, which also has three levels.

The handbook launch was led by NNAS Chair Anne Salisbury. Anne outlined how the schemes are used by a wide range of user groups such as primary schools and youth organisations as well as providing structure to organisations delivering health walks. With the tutor handbook now launched, one of the next major pieces of work for the NNAS is further development of their Young Navigator Star Award. As that scheme is suitable not only for young people, it is to be rebranded to reflect this.

Also present at the launch was the handbook's co-author, Pat Mee, who with her husband Brian, wrote the book on a voluntary basis. Anne was full of praise for Pat and Brian's 'diligence and creativity in creating a book of the highest quality.'

As well as publishing the NNAS tutor handbook, Harvey publishes the BMC British Mountain Maps. Proving ever popular since the Lake District map was launched over five years ago, the eleventh map in the series will be out later this month, covering the Brecon Beacons.
