Abseiling - get it right!

Posted by Alex Messenger on 09/12/2005
Poster available free of charge in the BMC shop

This poster highlights three important issues when abseiling - checking the anchors, using a prusik knot, and knotting the ends of the rope.

Abseiling accidents are often fatal and at the very least usually result in serious injuries. However, many accidents are the result of easily preventable human error. The poster is not definitive, as any serious accident is the result of many independent factors. But by highlighting specific issues, and making climbers think about their personal safety when abseiling, it is hoped there will be fewer abseiling accidents in the future.

The Abseiling and Belaying leaflet expands on the key messages and is available as a free download here in the BMC shop.

All the posters are available in the BMC Publications section of the BMC on-line shop.
