New Patrons for the BMC

New Patrons: Doug Scott and Tony Greaves

The BMC is delighted to have appointed Doug Scott CBE and Lord (Tony) Greaves as Patrons.

The appointments were agreed at the BMC National Council meeting on 3 December and take immediate effect.  Doug and Tony join Sir Chris Bonington, Lord Chorley and Ian McNaught-Davis as BMC Patrons.

Doug Scott is of course well known in the mountaineering community.  Doug has made 45 expeditions to the high mountains of Asia and has summitted the highest peaks on all seven continents. Doug is especially noted for being the first Englishman to summit Mount Everest along with Dougal Haston, during the 1975 expedition led by Chris Bonington. Doug is a past President of the Alpine Club and a former BMC Vice-president.  He is currently the BMC's representative on the UIAA Management Committee.  Doug's outstanding life-long contribution to alpinism and mountaineering was recognised earlier this year when he received a Piolet d'Or Lifetime Achievement Award.  Find out more about Doug Scott on his website www.dougscottmountaineering.co.uk

Lord Greaves (Lib Dem) has been involved with the BMC for many years and is part of the BMC's Access, Conservation and Envrionment Group.  He has been instrumental in strengthening our links within parliament and being a keen climber and hill walker himself he is an important voice for the BMC within government.  In particular, he has put forward amendments to the CRoW Act and the Marine and Coastal Access Act and asked questions in parliament on behalf of the BMC. He is a member of the recently established All Party Parliamentary Group on Mountaineering. Find out more about Lord Greaves at www.parliament.uk/biographies/lords/27124

The BMC sadly lost two of its Patrons earlier this year - Alan Blackshaw OBE and George Band OBE.  An informal memorial celebration of the life of George Band is to be held on Tuesday 20th December at the Royal Geographical Society in London.

The BMC looks forward having Doug and Tony on board as Patrons.
