British mountaineering legend Doug Scott CBE has been awarded an Honorary Membership of the UIAA.
BMC Patron Doug Scott received prestigious Honorary Membership of the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) over the weekend. Doug has been a very active and high-profile mountaineer all his life.
Doug Scott has said: “This has been an unexpected honour which I am very proud to receive. I join a long list of names over the years for whom I have the greatest respect."
He has contributed to the work of the UIAA in a number of ways – particularly as a former member of the UIAA Management Committee and various other UIAA Commissions – including the Mountaineering Commission and as Chair of The Traditional Values Working Group.
The BMC nominated Doug Scott for Honorary Membership of the UIAA. Deputy CEO Nick Colton says: "The BMC is delighted that BMC Patron, Doug Scott, has been honoured with this prestigious award. It is justly deserved for all the selfless work he has done for the UIAA, the BMC and the mountain people of Nepal over very many years and also for his peerless mountaineering record."
Esteemed mountaineer and BMC Patron Sir Chris Bonington adds “I cannot think anyone more deserving of this honour than Doug Scott. He has done so much for the hill people of Nepal through his charity,
Community Action Nepal“
Doug has spent a large part of his life working for mountain people, especially those who work in the mountains and for expeditions to the mountains. His work with the charity
Community Action Nepal – that he set up – is outstanding and his work with them continues until this day. The organization was even awarded the 6
th UIAA Mountain Protection Award.
Achievements galore
To name just a few of his notable accomplishments, Doug has reached the summit of 40 peaks in Asia, of which half were climbed as new routes or for the first time in Alpine Style. On top of this, he has reached the highest peaks on all seven continents.
Among many roles and honours he has undertaken and recieved, he is a past vice president of the BMC, past president of the Alpine Club and was made a CBE in 1994.
