On Saturday 16th May 2009 the BMC London and South East Area held their first outdoor meet for parents and their children at Harrisons Rocks near Groombridge.
The day was organised by the BMC London & South East Area Youth Co-ordinators. It was for young people and their parents who have experience of climbing, although perhaps only indoors so far, and wanted to try climbing outside, or perhaps visit a new area or even meet other people in a similar situation and make new contacts.
Local climbers - with a wealth of knowledge both about the climbing at Harrisons Rocks and also about climbing generally - were on hand to offer support and advice to parents and their children as they were introduced to the delights and intricacies of climbing on Southern Sandstone. The young people were also given a pack containing lots of useful BMC literature.
Initially it looked like it might rain and spoil things. But the day brightened to give an ideal rock climbing day and everyone got stuck in to end the day tired and happy.
After the climbing there was a well earned BBQ for all involved - parents, children and volunteers.
The day was a great success and the BMC would like to say a great big thank you to all the volunteers who helped out on the day and made it such an enjoyable and fruitful experience.
Parents and children also expressed their thanks and said how much they'd enjoyed and benefitted from the event, suggesting that more such events would be a great idea.

There are a large number of free places on courses for families who may struggle to afford it. Any families who live in rented accommodation and who receive income support or universal credit may contact the instructor of a course or Alex West for a place.
