The Afan Valley Mountaineering Club (AVMC) are disbanding and have kindly decided to donate their remaining funds of £1572.18 to the Jonathan Conville Memorial Trust (JCMT).
The AVMC was set up and run enthusiastically by Steve Rogers. Steve was a keen climber who had the patience and time to pass his rope work and climbing knowledge on to many new members of the club. He set about building a climbing wall in the YMCA in Port Talbot and always took new members for their first climbing experience on the Gower. Since Steve's death in 2003 membership of the club has declined with the sad result that they have decided to disband. The remaining club members decided that it would be a fitting tribute to Steve, and his passion for teaching young climbers, if the remaining funds were passed on to JCMT.
Needless to say the donation has been gratefully received by JCMT and they are extremely thankful. The Trust was set up by the family of Jonathan Conville after he died on the North face of the Matterhorn in the winter of 1979 aged 27. The Trust's aims are to assist individuals to train for and pursue their love of the outdoors in the spirit of adventure which Jonathan embraced during his life. The Trust provides subsidised training courses, for full information on the courses it provides please click here.
The trust is a registered charity, and depends on donations to promote mountain safety. Any financial support is most welcome. Contact can be made through the BMC.
