Want to try alpine mountaineering this year? There's no better place to start than on a subsidised Jonathan Conville Memorial Trust alpine mountaineering or alpine preparation course. But don't hang around: applications close on Friday 4 April.

Now a very important part of the mountaineering community, the Jonathan Conville Memorial Trust has been providing subsidised training courses for aspiring mountaineers since 1981.

Established by the family of Jonathan Conville after he died on the North Face of the Matterhorn in the winter of 1979/80, aged 27, the Trust aims to encourage and assist individuals to train for and pursue outdoor adventure in the spirit which Jonathan followed during his life.

What does the Trust do?

The trust encourages safe and enjoyable practice in mountaineering, by operating subsidised training as follows:

  • Alpine Preparation Courses in North Wales
  • Alpine Mountaineering Courses in Chamonix
  • Scottish Winter Mountaineering Courses

The alpine courses are delivered by Plas y Brenin. Applications are still open for the Alpine Preparation Courses and Alpine Mountaineering Courses.

But hurry: applications close on Friday 4 April

The subsidies provided by the Trust reduce the mountaineering course cost from £220 to £120 and the preparation course cost from £200 to £75. The BMC make an annual financial contributuion to the trust to support them in their work.

I would really love to get into Alpine Climbing and would really like to do a course like the Conville Alpine Course, but unfortunately I have passed the age limit. Are there any other courses that you could recommend that don't cost a fortune as I have very limited funds. Thanks Heather
