Quadruple amputee Jamie Andrew has set himself his biggest challenge yet – to complete an Iron Man Triathlon!
Jamie Andrew is the Scottish mountaineer who had his hands and feet amputated following a horrific accident in the French Alps in 1999. Miraculously, despite his handicap, Jamie has carried on with his mountaineering career and has made some amazing ascents all over the world, raising many thousands of pounds for charity along the way.
Earlier this month Jamie and fellow inspirational amputee Olivia Giles launched a brand new charity, called 500 miles, which aims to help amputees and other disabled people in deprived parts of the world.
In order to get the charity off to a flying start Jamie is going to attempt to complete his challenge on 4 August. Iron Man Triathlon is widely considered as one of the most gruelling feats of athletic endurance, even for able-bodied athletes. It comprises;
2.4 mile swim
112 mile cycle
26.2 mile run
Iron Man is a registered trade mark, so Jamie has named his challenge Titanium Man, after the high performance metal of which his prosthetic leg components are made.
You can sponsor Jamie, and it’s really easy to donate. Details are available from his website
If you don't have time for browsing websites you can go direct to the JustGiving website
Or you can simply text the word "Titanium" to 84424. Texts cost £3 of which at least £2 goes to the charity
The fundraising target is a very ambitious £50,000 so please give generously and encourage anyone else you know who might be interested to visit his site.
