The BMC’s involvement in guidebooks has a long tradition stretching back over 40 years and the role of these guides is important today as it has always been.
The BMC produce rock definitive climbing guidebooks to the Peak District and surrounding Pennine areas.
The BMC first became involved in publishing Peak District guidebooks in 1972 and has had a continued involvement ever since. Over those years, and even before, there have been trials and tribulations, dramas and controversies, much hair pulled out and much of it gone grey.
However, what cannot be denied is that there has now been over 35 years of tremendous definitive guidebooks to one of the world’s best climbing areas. The roll call of volunteers who are responsible for this series of guides is too long to list, but they are heroes one and all.
Today, under the auspices of the current guidebook committee chaired by Ian Carr, this work carries on. The BMC guides being produced in 2010 continue to match the standard of what has gone before.
Times may change, but quality, inspiration, innovation and dedication remain the same. Thanks to this the current series of BMC guides to the Peak and Pennine, with further guides for further afield planned, provide everything a climber could want from a guide, with definitive information to all routes and bouldering presented in a clear and enjoyable way.
