West 1 is High Sports newest site and boasts an intricate bouldering room combined with a training room and a top-rope and lead wall that spans 3 floors.
Our route setter for the Open competition was Yann Genoux who, teamed with Andy Perrin and Kris Zuraw for the 4Fun competition put in a cracking days work to create between them 17 problems (plus the timed head to head final) which were as varied as one could hope for. Our aim for the competition is to make it accessible for all whilst still being a challenge for those who climb regularly.
The day kicked off with the 4Fun competition, problems were spread between the main climbing wall, the boulder and training rooms so there was plenty of space which was especially good for Andy’s round-the-corner problem that saw a number of good attempts as well as a lot of people coming straight off! The atmosphere was great with the majority of those who attended the first round at Redhill improving their scores some by a few points, others by a lot. The competition ended in fine style with Jason Almeida winning the Adult Male category, Yvonne Cortrulia winning the Adult Female and Brendan Gallagher the Junior Category. Prizes for the winners were kindly donated by Boreal; our sponsor for Round 2.
The Open competition started on the back of the 4Fun and with the addition of Gaz Parry, Mike Langley and Leah Crane; the bar was suitably raised for all of those looking for a good result. The competition was steady with some excellent climbing, especially on the purple and blue routes which made their way across West 1’s sizeable overhang. Gaz eventually got the blues by shedding as much excess weight as possible (even his chalk bag) and Rob Lloyd was hot on his heels. In the end both of them made it through to the head to head along with Sam Cox and Seb Soithongsuk. They were joined by Leah Crane, Abi Heath and Storme Biggs. The head to head was an impressive timed traverse. Gaz was the fastest male with Leah the fastest female and both of them go through to the Super-Final at Crawley in March. The others through on points are Sam Cox and Abi Heath. Both Rob and Storme will be looking for a good result at Alton in January to get them through.
Once again, we would like to thank everyone for joining us at West 1 and we look forward to seeing you again at Alton on Sunday 9th January. Remember, if you’ve never been in a competition before, why not enter 4Fun or as a team? Wild Country/Red Chili are the sponsors at Alton so there are bound to be some great prizes up for grabs.
Registration is also still open for members of the British Bouldering Team. We are offering two wild cards straight into the Super Final with a shot at the £1,000.00 top prize. The cards will be drawn at random from those registered. To register email chris.evans@high-sports.co.uk
