Have you been inspired by Olympic climbing? It’s time to Get Climbing.

Posted by Alex Messenger on 07/08/2021

As climbing makes history in Tokyo, the big national organisations involved in UK Climbing have joined forces to launch an accessible new way for anyone to discover the benefits of climbing.

Get Climbing is a joint initiative between the Association of British Climbing Walls (ABC), British Mountaineering Council (BMC), Climb Scotland, NICAS, Mountain Training, Mountaineering Ireland and Plas y Brenin.

Get Climbing aims to reflect the new Olympic excitement and help new audiences discover the gripping sport of indoor climbing.

The new campaign supports climbing walls across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland by providing them with fresh, diverse imagery through posters and digital libraries.

This is backed up by social media and a new collaborative landing page.

Over 30 volunteer climbers from all backgrounds gathered at The Castle Climbing Centre in London in July to take part in the project, showcasing the fun and benefits of climbing indoors.

If you’d like to help people discover climbing and the adventure on their doorstep, then share www.get-climbing.co.uk.

This is a new way to find climbing walls in your area running Get Climbing taster sessions. You can also download a free Get Climbing guide, covering everything you need to know for your first visit and much more.

Launched for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the Get Climbing brand will build as we journey towards Paris 2024.

Kath Hipwell, CEO, Association of British Climbing Walls:
“Improving the diversity in indoor climbing from grassroots participation to board level representation is one of the key strategic pillars for the ABC. We are really happy that the Olympics has given us the platform and the sector has provided the collaboration to welcome new people in through the Get Climbing initiative.”

Paul Davies, CEO, BMC:
“It has been fantastic to work with all our partners on this exciting collaborative project. At the BMC, we’re committed to improving representation across our sport through removing the barriers for everyone that wants to discover climbing.”

Dave Evan, Climbing and Mountaineering Lead Instructor, Plas y Brenin:
“Here at Plas y Brenin, we support Get Climbing because we believe the benefits of a climbing life are vast and far reaching. It's an escape from over-stimulation and a lifestyle of peace. It gives you the opportunity to appreciate wide open spaces and infinite horizons. In a world of rules, it's a chance to make your own decisions. Climbing not only makes us fitter and healthier, both mentally and physically, but helps form friendships that will last a lifetime.”

Jamie Smith, ClimbScotland Development Manager, Mountaineering Scotland:
“We are delighted to be a part of the Get Climbing project with our national partners. Through this campaign we want to harness the interest and buzz currently around sport climbing being part of the Olympics for the first time, and direct people to their local indoor climbing facilities, opening the door to the world of climbing to a new audience. Climbing is a fun and social sport and we hope this initiative will help to further grow and diversify the climbing community in Scotland.”

Nicholas Parkin, Managing Director, National Indoor Climbing Awards Schemes:
“We hope that the incredible success of Sport Climbing at the Olympics will inspire a new generation to enjoy a lifetime of happy climbing experiences. The first step for many will be on a NICAS learn to climb scheme which covers both bouldering and roped climbing from ages 3 – 70+ but the Get Climbing initiative brings together all partners in the climbing sector so it doesn’t matter whether you prefer indoors or outdoors, or where you are in the country – we will guide you on your first steps to a whole new adventure.”
