The British mountains are experiencing some of the best winter mountaineering conditions for many years – but spare a thought for what might lie beneath all that snow and ice.
North facing, vegetated cliffs can offer excellent winter climbing. They can also be internationally important locations for special and rare mountain plants.
In Wales for example, the cliffs of Clogwyn y Geifr (Devil’s Kitchen cliffs), Ysgolion Duon and Clogwyn Du (Cwm Cneifion) are home to some of the rarest plants to be found in the UK, such as Snowdon Lily, Arctic Mousear, Holly Fern, Alpine saxifrage and many more.
So follow the advice in Welsh Winter Climbing – Conservation issues and enjoy the winter while it lasts, whilst taking care to minimise your impact on these fragile habitats.
