A protest rally will be held this weekend by opponents of the proposed wind turbine development at Nant y Moch on the flanks of Pumlumon, a remote and wild mountainous area of Mid-Wales.

On Sunday 6 March a protest rally is being organised by the the Cambrian Mountain Society, and will involve a very short walk up BRYNIAU RHYDDION - no more than 2 miles. The walk will be in protest against the plan for 64 huge turbines, including two 146.5 metre high turbines on Bryniau Rhyddion, and will give a good idea of the impact of turbines on the area. The celebrated mountaineer, environmentalist and award-winning author Jim Perrin will give a key note address. While the BMC has taken the view that as an organisation it does not have the expertise or resource to enter the wider debate about the suitability or otherwise of wind farms as a means of producing sutainable energy, many members in Wales have asked the BMC to object to this particular development. The main objections are on the grounds that it will have a drastic and permanent impact on an upland area that is renowned for its open landscape, its tranquility, remoteness and cultural history. Public Rights of Ways, including bridleways and footpaths in the area are likely to be affected and new vehicle access tracks created across open country to construct and maintain the proposed wind turbines.

Very close to the proposed site is the location of a very famous Welsh battle, the Battle of Hyddgen when in 1401 the rebel Welsh leader Owain Glyndwr defeated the armies of the English king, and is arguably as important a site to the history of Wales as Culloden is to Scotland.
