Climate change, greenhouse gas emissions, habitat loss and the surge in popularity of outdoor activities; these are just some of the reasons the BMC Board of Directors recently agreed a new Environmental & Sustainability Policy for the organisation.

Amongst other things the new policy commits the BMC to consistently measure and publicise our annual climate footprint and progress in reducing our emissions and to develop a Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction and Sustainability Plan to be actioned across BMC workstreams.

The policy covers the day-to-day operations and processes of the BMC (office, staff and volunteers), our energy use, the events we run, and travel and transportation across the organisation. This comes on the back of the BMC signing up to the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework in 2021 – see Ambitious new targets for Sports for Climate Action announced; this is a cross-sport initiative which provides a clear structure to enable us to plan our work in this area.

This is a challenging issue for aspects of the BMC’s work (and climbing, hill walking & mountaineering activities in general), in particular those involving large-scale events and significant overseas travel. An important strand of the policy will address this through the promotion of sustainable transport and low carbon travel options (car share options, public transport, walking, cycling and other non-car modes); encouraging web conferencing and remote meetings to reduce the need to travel, and; ensuring, as best we can, that meetings, events and competitions can be accessed by public transport.

The BMC will continue to support The Climate Project as part of this overall commitment.
