Green Friday - Climate Action Day, 24 Oct

Posted by Cath Flitcroft on 14/10/2009

The organisation, 350.org is urging people worldwide to take part in various activities to raise awareness of climate change on Saturday 24 October, 2009, ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference.

350.org is spearheading a campaign to spread awareness about the number '350' which, according to leading scientists, is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide measured in 'Parts Per Million' in our atmosphere. We already have excess levels of CO2 in the atmosphere and it is believed that 350 PPM is the number humanity needs to get back to as soon as possible to avoid runaway climate change.

To move political leaders to take this seriously, 350.org is organising a huge global day of action on 24 October, designed to drum that number into every head on the planet. Churches will be ringing their bells 350 times; banners will be hung from iconic sights such as the Taj Mahal and the Eiffel Tower; people will be joining hands in great lines along the world's beaches. There will even be 350 scuba divers down off the Great Barrier Reef, which is being affected by higher ocean temperatures.

Climb 350 - send us a photo
There's no place that captures the public imagination more thoroughly however, than the peaks and cliffs that we climb. 350.org and the BMC is urging its members to get up somewhere high and visible on 24 October, and figure out some way to make that number visible.

The BMC is encouraging its members to get into the spirit of 350.  Perhaps climb 350 feet or even attempt to do 350 routes in one day (maybe you and a group of friends). Maybe stomp it into the snow or hang a great banner off a rock face and if possible take a photo and send it to us at cath@thebmc.co.uk or log onto 350.org directly.

For example, in Snowdonia, EcoBro, a community action group, is planning for around 250 volunteers wearing a fluorescent yellow or red jacket to link arms along the 3500ft contour just below Snowdon's summit. If you are fit and can get hold of a fluorescent jacket then EcoBro is looking for people to join the action at 1pm. For further details on EcoBro's Snowdon action, contact Rod Gritten on 01766 770933.
