What findings have been made by the BMC Governance Working Group (GWG) and what recommendations will be made to the BMC Board?
As some members are aware, the Governance Working Group (GWG) has been busy looking at various aspects of the BMC’s governance. It has now reached a stage where its report can be shared with all our members.
Please find attached the report HERE, which is presented to you for consultation.
The purpose of the GWG is to provide recommendations to the Board on:
-
policies and processes to improve AGM communications and proxy voting,
-
improving membership engagement,
-
to review the process for appointing Nominated Directors, and
-
wider aspects of the role of the Nominations Committee (NomCom).
This review was prompted by concerns raised at and following the 2019 AGM, particularly where differing assumptions had been made over procedure. Clarity on agreeing and communicating what the ‘BMC norms’ should be was seen as a key component in achieving consensus, and over 130 recommendations are made.
The aim of this consultation is to secure input, amendments and improvements, and to explain why proposals have been made. Ultimately, strong membership support for constitutional proposals is hoped for prior to their presentation at the AGM. In tandem, membership endorsement is important for the way in which the Board and some of its committees will in future administer sub-constitutional matters. We hope that this report will outline agreeable approaches to AGM procedures, and return the organisation’s debates to those of the policies and principles of the sport.
In preparation for the 2021 AGM, an Open Forum will be held on 18 March 2021 at 7pm. Feedback from this will be used to finalise the GWG report, which will then return to National Council and the Board for approval, adoption and implementation. The focus of that Open Forum will be finalised shortly, but if you want to register now, you can at Eventbrite.
Please send feedback on the report and suggestions on the aspects that you are most keen to discuss to agm@thebmc.co.uk and keep an eye out for further information on the agenda for the Open Forum on 18 March.
