The GB Climbing Team is flying out to Salt Lake City, Utah, on Friday to compete at two IFSC Boulder World Cup events – the first competitions in a year for many of the athletes. We can’t wait to see them back in action.
It’s been a tough year with many challenges along the way. Events were hit particularly severely and everyone has been working hard to see our athletes return to competition – we’re thrilled to finally be sending a team on their way!
GB Climbing is hugely grateful that the many obstacles have been overcome for its athletes to attend the IFSC World Cups at Salt Lake City on 21-22 and 28-30 May .
Tom Greenall, GB Climbing Head Coach, said: “As a team we are greatly looking forward to the challenge and the opportunity to compete out in Salt Lake City over the next couple of weeks. The international travel regulations have certainly presented all of us with obstacles, but this is all now part of the process of preparation for our teams.
“At heart, we are all competitors and what we want is to be out there on the mats each weekend with the best teams from around the world. We're looking forward to being part of that again and it’s great for the viewers at home and great for the sport of climbing to see World Cups back after this last year.”
To celebrate, we made something to send them on their way in style:

For many of the GB Climbing athletes, this will be their first international competitions for well over a year, and we’re excited to see how their training throughout lockdown has paid off. Though climbing walls have been closed, the GB Climbing Team has been able to use its excellent Unit E training facilities at the Climbing Works to stay sharp and keep practicing those dynamic comp-style moves on huge volumes.
Nathan Phillips, GB Climbing athlete and reigning British Bouldering Champion, said:
“It’s been a few years since I’ve been to the US and I’m excited to go back! I’ve competed in Vail twice before but this time it’s a new venue in Salt Lake City. It will be cool to be in a new place and experience a different city. I’m going to go all in at these comps just like I do in every competition. I have no idea how I compare to the rest of the world at the moment but I’ve done all the preparation I can.
“This year my aim is to get back to a level that I was at before the pandemic, but I will of course push for more than that if possible. The pre-season preparation, from a team perspective, has been one of the best we’ve ever had: lots of training together to form a closely knit team and a new facility to cater to our needs. I think GB is becoming a force to be reckoned with.”
We’re delighted to be supported by @securitgroupltd for the second year running. The team kit is looking fierce and ready for action. The film was produced by BMC TV at Unit E in The Climbing Works during team training.
