After hosting the World Championships four years ago, Hachioji, Japan is all set to welcome the inaugural Boulder event of the 2023 IFSC Season this weekend 21-23 April.
We're super excited to return to Hachioji after a four-year hiatus, the last time the GB Climbing Team competed here was at the World Championships back in 2019, which marked a moment in history for our sport as the first Olympic qualifying event.
It's the first ever Boulder World Cup for many athletes that are just joining the senior team, Dayan Akhtar, Erin McNeice and Toby Roberts. But while it's their first senior Boulder World Cup, they already have a lot of experience as Dayan and Erin will be looking to build on their performance at the Euro Cup in Chambéry, France earlier this month, and Toby Roberts will be aiming to emulate his medal success from the Lead World Cup in Edinburgh last year.
There's an equally important year ahead for GB Climbing; nearly all the athletes competing this weekend, and many that aren't, will be dreaming of qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The next few months on the international stage will be pivotal for reflecting and learning on performances and tactics, and refining each athletes' approach to achieve their potential ahead of the World Championships in August, which will be the first Olympic Qualifying Event. So our athletes will be excited to get stuck back into the World Cup circuit, test out the winter training, and of course, have some fun before the pressure ramps up.
Max Milne: “I couldn’t be more excited! If you asked me this a month ago I’d be super tired as I’ve been training so hard throughout the whole winter. I’m really excited to fly to Japan, Korea and Salt Lake, I can’t wait.”
We can't wait to see what shapes this strong squad representing GB Climbing will be pulling out on the wall this weekend. The athletes competing are:
