Brand New Climbing Centre Opens In Swindon -Rockstar Climbing

Posted by Rob Adie on 27/11/2015

Swindon is home to a brand new dedicated climbing centre that opened its doors this November in Stratton. This ambitious project provides a state-of-the-art facility for an already active and growing climbing community and aims to inspire families, schools, colleges and individuals of all ages and abilities to discover this amazing sport.

Rockstar’s owner, Mike Aston, commented, “Climbing is one of the few sports that develops a healthy mind as well as a healthy body. It is an empowering activity which genuinely changes people’s lives for the better. By making our facility as inclusive as possible, our ambition is to encourage everyone to discover how climbing can help them become fitter and stronger both mentally and physically.”

The new facility, which occupies 7,700 square foot, has world-class bouldering, roped routes up to 10 metres in height, and slacklining. In addition to these activities Rockstar Climbing also has a dedicated traverse area where families with children as young as four can spend time and have fun.

There is also an emphasis within the centre to expand the educational side of climbing and Rockstar is working to help support more schools in bringing climbing to their curriculum. The centre will also offer national indoor climbing and bouldering award schemes (NICAS and NIBAS) which are proving popular with schools and parents alike. As Rockstar’s Centre Manager, Brian Hall, explains, “Climbing helps teach children valuable life skills such as perseverance, the value of goal setting, and builds social interaction skills. It also boosts confidence, creativity and problem solving skills as well as improving hand/eye co-ordination. The best bit is that kids get to develop these skills whilst having fun.”

As part of Rockstar’s bid to bring climbing to Swindon and the surrounding towns they offer taster sessions, courses and groups, climbing clubs and coaching, parties and corporate days. For those who relish a challenge there will also be regular competitions.

Today we went climbing for our 4th time. I had money in my wallet to buy myself a climbing course because we love it so much, me first then the kids too. BUT... today half our in and we were told the kids can't go past a certain height even though I found nothing in the rules to suggest this. The rules just say I am fully responsible for my kids and not to climb when they are & to supervise them at all times when climbing. Such a shame because it completely killed the whole thing for us there and then so we got our money back and left extremely dissapointed. It had become our Sunday thing plus my new hobby. What a let down.
