Derby is about to get a new climbing facility, thanks to a campaign by Normanton Girls’ Club.
In November 2006 the club secured money through the Big Lottery Fund and ITV’s People’s Millions contest to build a climbing boulder in Derby Arboretum.
Derby is not well served by climbing facilities, so the boulder will be a boon to local climbers, and will also help to fulfil a number of aims, including:
- Introducing a wider range of sports to all ages and ethnic groups, in particular young females from ethnic minorities.
- Encouraging community involvement in the Arboretum.
- Acting as a stepping stone to venturing into the countryside.
Climbing wall manufacturer Bendcrete started work last month on the boulder, and on Saturday 18 August (12 midday – 5pm) there will be a grand opening, with a host of activities and entertainment including:
- Pull Up Competition
- Music
- Martial Arts
- Keep Fit
- Cycle Tryouts
- Dr Bike
- Films and much more
