At the BMC National Council meeting on 1st December 2007 the BMC took two huge steps towards achieving equality within the organisation.

The first step was the ratification of the new Equality & Diversity Policy

The second was that the BMC's National Council gave its offiicial nomination for BMC Vice-President to Rehan Siddiqui. This is a significant step forward as it is thought this is the first time that a member of a minority ethnic community has been put forward for such a high office within the BMC. This will now be voted on at the BMC AGM in April 2008 at the end of the current Vice President Bill Renshaw's 3 year term.

Below is the personal summary that went to the BMC National Council meeting.

Rehan Siddiqui – Personal Summary
Currently Chair of the BMC Equity Steering Group, Rehan started climbing in 1971 on the gritstone crags around Manchester with his elder brother Nadim. Within a short time he was climbing regularly and became well-known in the Peak District climbing scene of that time. He also spent many summers climbing in the Alps. He is a member of the Climbers' Club and is also a member of the Club Alpin Francais (Chamonix section).

In his business life he is the CEO of a rope access company and chairs the ongoing development of the rope access standard in ASTM International (American Standards for Testing Materials) as well as sitting on the board of directors of the Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians in the USA. He lives in the Saddleworth area and now enjoys ski touring and doing classic alpine routes.
