On Saturday 75 Leading Ladder Finalists filled the Lakeland Climbing Centre in Kendal and there was some tough competition on the tallest climbing wall in England.

All the finalists had 6 hours to climb 5 routes in their categories and there were some impressive efforts in all the categories, with experienced competitors climbing alongside competition rookies all giving maximum effort.

Special mention should go to Alex Waterhouse being the only climber to top out on all of the climbs including the F8a+! Alex Norton also put in a sterling effort despite him being the shortest person in the competition, he managed to overcome some really reachy moves with fantastic technique and determination.

Alex Norton's not that small is he? I'm sure some of those 11 and 12 yr olds are much shorter.

Alex Norton is tiny, I don't think here was anyone appreciably smaller there on the day. As a member of the GB climbing team in Youth C he was obliged to enter the elite category and therefore had the stiffer end of the grade spectrum to contend with. The outstanding thing about Alex for me was his approach. Despite being thwarted at the top of the 7a+ by a long move, he wasn't disheartened and continue to attack the higher grades with gusto. At the end of a long day he left fairly cheerful despite not having topped any routes but determined to train hard and improve. In my opinion he deserves the praise.
