BMC Care & Maintenance booklet - amendment

The BMC Technical Committee wishes to highlight an addendum to the text of its recent publication, Care & Maintenance.

This clarification has become necessary due firstly to the use of differing terms within different industries to describe similar chemical processes, and secondly after consideration of further material unavailable at the time of writing.

The committee would like to stress that there are no safety issues involved with this change, it is purely an issue of technical nomenclature and a small revision, and apologise for any misunderstandings that this may have created.

The section concerned involves pages 33 and 34 (the section on seawater corrosion), and an updated version of the text with changes highlighted is available below as a pdf.

Safety alert for Fixe lower-offs: updated

The DAV (German Alpine Club) have issued a safety alert for lower-off units from manufacturer Fixe, some of which have been reported to fail by cracking of one of the chain links. These units are primarily designed for use at indoor walls, but are also sometimes installed outside with the hangers mounted onto expansion bolts to provide an outdoor lower-off.
