At the June National Council meeting, Yorkshire Area Rep Andy Syme was elected as Deputy President of the BMC, to work with the President in leading National Council in the delivery of its functions up to the 2020 AGM.
The Deputy President’s role will cover some of the non-Board duties previously covered by BMC Vice-Presidents, and when deputising for the President, will have the power of authority that the President would normally have in non-Board duties.
As well as deputising for the President, the function of the Deputy President is to complement the President role, bringing a different perspective, and a complementary set of attributes and qualities.
About Andy
Andy’s love of the outdoors started on long walks with the family in the Yorkshire Dales, Lakes and Scotland, but he fell in love with mountaineering aged 12 on a family visit to Canada when he ‘wandered off’ up the Saskatchewan Glacier. Over 30 years later, he is still an active climber and mountaineer.
Andy versus Almscliff - no contest!
Andy has climbed in the UK, USA, Africa, Alps and Himalayas. Despite still seeing himself as a trad and ice climber, he probably spends more time bouldering, indoors and out, than anything else, though he does get away for a pure ice week abroad every year.
He has represented the Yorkshire Area on National Council since 2017. He was instrumental in amending the Articles of Association in 2018 and is the Governance Workstream Lead in the Organisational Development Group.
During the day he is the General Manager of a small IT firm providing software to GPs and the NHS in Primary Care. Prior to that he was an officer in the British Army and then a manager in the NHS.
