Young Climbers Compete in London

Posted by Mark Alderson on 29/01/2007
Joel Charley 16-17 Champion

The Westway Climbing Centre in London was the venue for the first national Youth Indoor Climbing Championships. More than 60 climbers aged 7 to 17 took part in the roped climbing competition.

The adventurous format followed the British Indoor Climbing Championships rules with some adjustments to allow the two younger categories to top-rope their routes. The result was an exciting day with a marvellous mix of friendly rivalry and competitive tension. It was great to see the more experienced participants welcoming and encouraging the newcomers.
All age groups had a qualification round in the morning where every climber attempted two routes. Lunch was accompanied by a fun climbing competition with prizes sponsored by Urban Rock. The afternoon finals were on-sight; even the 7-9 and 10-12 competitors went into isolation (made that little bit busier and less intimidating by some companying parents).

As always, the competition was supported by a throng of volunteers who, without exception, worked hard all day and treated the climbers to a thoroughly enjoyable day of competition.
