Wombles of Wimberry

Posted by Martin Kocsis on 22/08/2007
Even better than it looks!

Long dismissed as "The best grit crag in the Peak", Wimberry recently receieved a bit of nip and tuck at the hands of local climbers.

They braved dire weather and perilous drops during a day’s clean-up to restore a popular beauty spot to its dazzling best.

The work, from the team of people from local organisations, gave well-known landmark and climbing venue Wimberry Rocks, which is also known as Indian’s Head, a much-needed tidy-up.

The spot has fantastic views and is a popular picnic site for people visiting Saddleworth but is prone to littering from those who don’t take their litter home.

The debris then gathers between rocks and down narrow, 14ft-deep cracks. Nonetheless, the team managed to rid the place of rubbish.

They included Rick Gibbon of the British Mountaineering Council; Peak District ranger Andy Valentine; Emily Thompson from Groundwork Oldham and Rochdale; Jason Bromley from Oldham Primary Care Trust and Oldham Outdoor Pursuits Club (OOPC); Alan Keane from OOPC and Oldham Community Leisure; and local climber Mark Hilton.

They left with lots of rubbish and Wimberry looking a lot cleaner. Alan Keane said: “Thank you to all who took part. It was a job well done.”
