We're excited be working alongside YHA to launch Hills 2 Oceans litter picking hubs at some of their key hostels across England and Wales, to encourage the hill walking and climbing community to help remove mountains of waste.
Hills 2 Oceans is calling on everyone to get involved in a litter pick to help remove as much litter and plastic from our hills, mountains and crags as possible, so it doesn’t end up in our oceans.
By providing free litter picking equipment (bags and pickers) at participating hostels, visitors will be able to use these when they are out and about in the great outdoors, helping to protect and preserve our natural environment and tackle local litter which has become a more noticeable problem since Covid.
The YHA participating hostels include:
-
YHA Ambleside
-
YHA Berwick
-
YHA Borrowdale
-
YHA Keswick
-
YHA Coniston Holly How
-
YHA New Forest
-
YHA National Forest
-
YHA Castleton Losehill Hall
-
YHA South Downs
-
YHA Ironbridge Coalport
-
YHA Whitby
-
YHA Okehampton
-
YHA Snowdon Pen-y-Pass
-
YHA Broad Haven
Help remove mountains of waste when you visit a YHA Hostel
We are encouraging anyone visiting any one of these hostels to make use of the kit.
There are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean and this figure will treble within the next ten years if we don’t act now.
From plastic bottles and crisp packets to banana skins and face masks, please pick up litter when you’re in the hills to stop it reaching our Oceans. (Importantly, if you are also using disposable face masks, please cut the straps before popping these in the bin as they have the potential to harm wild animals).
Share your rubbish stories with us
What’s a litter pick without a challenge? The litter problem sits with us humans, but the solution also sits with us too. We are asking you to #LiftYourLitter to show your strength and determination to help our natural environment.
We’d love to see your pictures too so please tag @YHAOfficial, @teambmc and use the hashtags #LiftYourLitter and #Hills2Oceans. You can also join other litter picking heroes on our dedicated Hills2Ocean Facebook page.
