Winter training weekend for clubs

Moving on steep ground

The beginning of March saw another successful BMC Club Training Winter Skills course being delivered.

As part of the BMC Club Training programme seven BMC club members gathered at the Alex MacIntyre hut near Fort William for the weekend, attending the course which was delivered by Adele Pennington and Paul Lewis.

The first morning saw the group discussing the weather and avalanche forecasts in the hut, before heading up to Stob Coire nan Lochan in Glen Coe.

Once in the Coire ice axe arresting was practised before splitting into two groups. One team stayed in the coire to develop further skills with Paul, whilst Adele's group went for a journey up the NW ridge and topping out on Stob Coire nan Lochan. After reuniting in the Coire, the group headed back to the hut, tired but very happy after a full day out.

The weather held for Sunday and Ben Nevis was the venue. On their way to the CIC hut more footwork skills were covered, and the group were lucky enough to find some ice to test out their front pointing technique.

An ascent of Number Four Gully provided the perfect venue to put all the skills into effect for real. After topping out through the cornice, a short walk saw the group on top of Britain's highest mountaIn.

BMC support for clubs: tell us what you think
The BMC's Club Training programme is overseen by the BMC Clubs Committee. They would love to hear your thoughts on the work carried out by the BMC for clubs, so as to make this as relevant and useful as possible. Your club can also tell us what you think via the online survey.

There are currently vacancies in the committee for representatives from the SW and NE. If you're a member of club based there and would like to steer the BMC's work for clubs then why not get involved?
