Wilton Quarries illegal firing

Posted by Rob Dyer on 11/01/2011

Several reports have been received towards the end of 2010 of shooting taking place on the ranges at Wilton 2 and 3 Quarries without red warning flags being raised.

The quarries are owned and managed by Bolton Rifle & Pistol Club and Bolton Gun Club respectively, with both clubs requiring their members to behave in a responsible and safe manner and use the agreed red flag warning system. The two clubs have confirmed that any instances of firing without flags raised will not have occurred by one of their members and can be considered illegal firing.

Firing without warning flags poses a serious danger to climbers, walkers and other members of the public, as they could walk into fall of shot areas without being aware of the danger. The BMC would encourage anyone who sees firing taking place in these quarries without the red warning flags in clear view to report their sightings to the local police station in the first instance on (01618) 565689, and also to the BMC Access Team on (01614) 383309 or robd@hotmail.com.
The exisiting access arrangements continue for Wilton 2 and 3, further information is available on the RAD at: https://www.thebmc.co.uk/bmcCrag/ViewCrag.aspx?id=389
